Safety model

The cleaner should earn every click.

StayCleanMac separates low-risk cleanup from anything that deserves human review, so the default path stays fast without becoming careless.

How it works

No wizards. No drama. Three steps.

No "we found 9,847 problems!" theatrics. Just transparent scanning, review-first choices, and reversible actions.

  1. Step 01

    Launch & scan

Open StayCleanMac and run Quick Scan. Apps, safe caches, and startup items scan in parallel; large files and duplicates scan when you open those tools.

    +Space Scan
  2. Step 02

    Review findings

Each tool shows paths, sizes, status, and contextual notes. Smart Clean pre-selects only safe cache items macOS or apps can rebuild on demand.

    • Safari caches 2.1 GB
    • Xcode derived 3.2 GB
    • App logs 2.1 GB
    • Old Downloads 5.4 GB
  3. Step 03

    Clean with Undo

Everything goes to Trash first — nothing is permanently deleted. Press ⌘Z or tap Undo in the toast to restore instantly.

Six ways to clean

Smart Clean plus five tools. No bundleware.

One dashboard action and five focused tools instead of fifty. Each one does one job — transparently, and reversibly.

Privacy & safety

Your Mac. Your data. Nobody else's.

Every scan runs on your Mac. Findings stay local, and scan actions do not need the network. Sparkle update checks are separate and signed.

No cloud uploads, no telemetry

Zero outbound connections during scans. No analytics, crash reports, or "anonymized usage data."

Trash-first, always

Every action moves files to Trash — never permanent delete. You stay in control of the final empty.

Undo everything with ⌘Z

A toast appears after every operation. Tap Undo or press ⌘Z within 10 seconds to instantly restore.

Signed, notarized, hardened

Developer ID signing, Apple notarization, hardened runtime. Updates via Sparkle with EdDSA signatures.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked.

Is StayCleanMac really free?

Yes. StayCleanMac is free, with no ads, trials, or premium tiers. It's distributed on GitHub Releases as a signed and notarized DMG. If you want to support development, sponsor the project — but there's no paywall gating any feature.

Sponsor on GitHub
Why does it need Full Disk Access?

To scan protected Library folders like ~/Library/Caches and ~/Library/Preferences, plus system paths like /Library/LaunchDaemons. macOS requires explicit permission for these. You grant it once at first launch through System Settings — StayCleanMac never transmits what it finds.

What if I accidentally delete something important?

Every operation moves files to the Trash first, and a toast appears with an Undo button. Press ⌘Z or tap Undo within 10 seconds to instantly restore. Beyond that, items live in your Trash until you empty it. The only exceptions are system-level startup items and permission resets — those are noted explicitly and cannot be undone.

How is this different from CleanMyMac or similar apps?

StayCleanMac is focused and transparent. Smart Clean plus five clearly-scoped tools, no "performance score" theater, no subscription, no cloud sync, no sign-in. It's written in SwiftUI as a native Apple Silicon app, weighs {size}, and shows you exactly what it will do before acting.

Which Macs does it run on?

StayCleanMac currently ships as an Apple Silicon build for macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. Intel Macs are not supported by the current release artifact.

How do updates work?

StayCleanMac uses the Sparkle framework with EdDSA-signed releases. It checks for updates every 24 hours in the background. Downloads come from GitHub Releases, where the release history is available.
